Fort Popham, Maine

Almost a year ago now (holy moly was it really?!) I traveled to Maine to visit my Aunt and Uncle. I stayed a week and they showed me a lot of beautiful spots. Each morning I would walk the beaches with my Aunt and their dog Maya, so be ready for a few posts to encompass all my adventures here! In the meantime, this post will be about Fort Popham, Maine.

The Fort was worn down, old, and empty. The wind from the ocean howled through the empty spaces to the point where my ears were full of white noise. We were the only ones there and we took our time exploring. There were many niches and weather stained spiral stairwells.

The stone corridors stretched on and on and on and slightly curved along the U shaped Fort. The worn stone reminded me a little of Hogwarts and I explored with enthusiasm.

The arched ceilings reminded me less of a Fort and more of some sort of worn mansion or old city building.

The corner of each end of the U shaped fort was some sort of cellar or storage area that delved deep into the still shadows. I took one step in and immediately all sound was muffled and distant. There was nothing but the silence and my heartbeat. I took that first step out with chills up and down my arms. I decided not to take my chances with restless spirits and left as quickly as I could! As we left, I looked out through the holes and across the water, hearing the waves gently lap at the edges.
